1. Eastern Promises (2007)

Uwaga, w nocie pojawiają się spoilery.
Watch out, spoiler alert!

PL: Eastern Promises to thriller z duża dozą czarnego humoru w reżyserii samego Davida Cronenberga. Tym razem reżyser "Muchy" opowiada nam historię rosyjskiej mafii w Londynie i poniekąd rosyjskich tatuaży. Ale po kolei. Boże Narodzenie, w szpitalu rodzi się dziewczynka, jej matka umiera. Pielęgniarka Anna kradnie pamiętnik matki i postanawia go przetłumaczyć, aby dojść do rodziny dziewczynki (ciekawostka, wujka Anny gra Jerzy Skolimowski, miło). Wtedy Anna wpada w niezły szajs.

ENG: Eastern Promises is a thriller movie well spiced with black humour, directed by David Cronenberg himself. This time, the "Fly" director brings us to London into (tattooed) world of Russian mafia. But let's start from the beginning. Christmas, a girl is born, the mother dies in childbirth. Nurse Anna steals the woman's diary and decides to translate it to find the newborn's family, descending into London's expatriate Russian underworld.

Same dziary mają również znaczenie fabularne w przede wszystkim kilku scenach.

ENG: This really good movie is stuffed with tattooed bodies of the villains. Traditional Russian prison tattoos of Nikolai and Kirill (see below) tell us a lot about these two, about who they are, and what they do. The tattoos take their part in the plot as well. First, when the body of a drowned man is found, the police officer knows already who might be the murderer and where to find them. Later, we see a poetic scene of Nikolai's being tattooed on his way to become one of the Vors, the tattoos on his shoulder and knees mean that he will knee before no man, or no one. Later on we learn that the best place to meet is a public bath as one "can see what others have on their skin". Finally, the tattoo symbolises the end (or just the beginning) of the story.

Wytatuowana. Nie masz tatuaży, nie istniejesz. Ten tutaj był kapitanem."
ENG: The tattoos in the knees say that he didn't kneel down before anybody. In the Russian prisons They have written histories in their bodies... in tattoos. If one doesn't have them they doen't exist. This was a captain.

PL: "Jestem vorem od urodzenia. Te gwiazdy to pierdolone znamiona!"
ENG: "I am from birth a Vor.  These stars are fucking birthmarks!"

ENG: "We can see that you were in a prison in Siberia and that you were a thief."

PL: "Żyłem podług kodeksu bractwa, żyję i żyć będę.
Dlatego puste miejsca na piersiach i na kolanach zostaną wypełnione gwiazdami."
ENG: "There is only the code. The vory v zakone which I have always followed that is why there is an empty space above my heart and knees where the stars will go."

PL: "Semyon polecił to miejsce do spotkań w interesach, ponieważ widać jakie kto nosi tatuaże."
ENG: "Samyon recommends this place for meetings of businesses, because you can see all those tattoos".

PL: "Zobaczycie gwiazdy na jego piersi, wykończcie go."
ENG: "You'll will see the stars in his chest, finish him".

ENG: On Kola's shoulder we see a tattooed crow with a quotation from a very popular Russsan  folk song "Black Crow, yours I am not". The black crow stands for death.
PL: "- Posunąłeś się za daleko.
- Jeśli teraz przerwą operację, zmarnują to.
ENG: "- You have gone beyond what was agreed.
-If they finish the operation now, they will be wasting this. So tell the Russians that there are seen the stars on my heart."

ENG: The tattoos from the movie final credits, it seems all are Nokolai's, but we're not 100% sure, so if you've got better info - let us know by email.

PL: Prawdopodobne "Kapusiom śmierć".
ENG: Most likely "Death to snouts".

ENG: Cathedrals were tattooed in Russian prison culture to specify the number of years one has spent in prison or the number of convictions he or she has. The domes  can each stand for 1 year or 1 conviction. The words in old church slavic mean "Holy Russia.

PL: Napis przy czaszce: "Na przekór losowi". Data na ramieniu to data wprowadzenia w ZSRR dekretu dotyczącego polityki karnej.
ENG: Lettering by the skull say "Against the fate". The date on the shoulder stands for changes in Russian prison politics law.

ENG: Great thanks to Anna, Karolina and Marta for helping us dissolving the Russian.
